Waffle House Identified as One of OSHA’s “Dirty Dozen”, Decatur Waffle House Workers Demand Better, Safer Working Conditions

WC_4

There is no question that most Decatur residents and workers would agree that Decatur workers have the right to feel safe and secure when they work their jobs. The idea of the threat of violence while trying to earn an honest wage seems untenable, unfair, and simply un-American. However, the truth of the matter is that some workplaces can present dangers to workers, and can even be “hotbeds” for violent activity. Unfortunately, beloved restaurant chain Waffle House has been deemed one of these workplaces, and Decatur workers know it.

According to local news reports, recognizing the dangers present at Waffle House (and the lack of livable pay), Decatur Waffle House workers marched from across the street of a nearby Waffle House on College Avenue in Avondale Estates to the Waffle House Museum. The purpose of the march was to take a stand on working conditions at Waffle House, including the lack of proper security to prevent workers from violence that occurs at the popular breakfast food chain. Decatur Waffle House worker Katie Giede said of the safety condition at Waffle House, “Any time at Waffle House, you’re scared for your life…You never know what’s going to happen in there. It’s treated like a joke, and it’s serious, so we need some changes and better security.” Giede noted that she and other Decatur Waffle House workers are seeking to change company policy so that more managers are involved in safety issues at Waffle House, and so that the company will implement more security cameras and, potentially, security guards.

The Decatur Waffle House worker march came on the heels of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health’s release of the 2024 “Dirty Dozen”, a list of employers who have noted “unsafe practices”. Waffle House made the list, with OSHA noting that the chain has “developed a reputation as a hotbed for violence.”
