Ohio Worker’s Cause of Death Revealed in Horrific Workplace Accident
The investigation into an Ohio worker’s horrific death has led to a gruesome and tragic conclusion. According to local reports, last weekend on Saturday, January 13, a worker at the Hubbard, Ohio Ellwood Engineered Castings plant was killed on the job around 5:00 a.m. The worker’s death prompted an investigation by Hubbard police, and this morning the Hubbard Township police report was released, revealing conclusions that investigators have made about the terrible workplace death.
Investigators now believe that the worker, who has only been identified by his nickname “Jay”, was working an overnight shift on Saturday morning when the incident occurred. The facility was performing routine operations, and as part of his duties that day, Jay was working inside of a pit. While Jay was in the pit, molten steel began to spill into the pit, landing on Jay. The Hubbard Township police report notes that a witness told law enforcement officers that “a malfunction with the casting caused the spill”. Investigators note that an employee shouted for workers to “get out of the way”, and moved the ladle of the molten steel material away from the workers, but, unfortunately, Jay was not able to get out of the way in time to avoid being hit with the molten steel. He was killed in the workplace accident.
As far as Jay’s employer is concerned, the company’s president, Pat Callihan, released the following statement, following his death, “ELLWOOD Engineered Castings expresses our deepest sympathies to the team member’s family following this terrible incident. We are working to provide support to the family during this difficult time.”
Although police have released their report regarding the horrific workplace death, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) investigation is still ongoing.
