Major Gwinnett County Employers And Workers’ Compensation
Gwinnett County is the second most populous county in Georgia, with almost one million people living there in 2020.
According to data published online by the Gwinnett County Government, approximately 450,000 residents of the county were employed in 2020, and the top 10 employers in the county are:
- Gwinnett County Public Schools
- Gwinnett County Government
- Northside Hospital
- Publix
- Walmart
- State of Georgia
- S. Postal Service
- Kroger
- Primerica
- Home Depot
Under Georgia law, any employer that has at least three employees is required to carry workers’ compensation insurance. Because all of the employers listed above have more than one thousand employees in the state, they clearly pass the threshold test that determines whether they should carry workers’ compensation insurance. However, the type of insurance or coverage these top Gwinnett County employers carry varies widely.
Four of the biggest ten employers in Gwinnett County are government entities. One is part of the Federal government, one is part of the state government, and two are part of the Gwinnett County government.
The biggest outlier in the group of top Gwinnett County employers is the U.S. Postal Service. Because the postal service is a branch of the federal government, its workers are covered under Federal workers’ compensation law instead of state workers’ compensation law.
State Agencies are self-insured and their workers’ compensation claims are managed by the Georgia Department of Administrative Services, also known as DOAS.
Gwinnett County Public Schools are also self-insured for workers’ compensation. However, their workers’ compensation claims are managed by a third party administrator called Davies Claims Solutions, which is based in Nashville, Tennessee. The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners is also self-insured.
The private employers in the group are almost all self-insured. However, many of them have third-party administrators that manage their workers’ compensation claims. Publix and Walmart typically have claims adjusters that are employees of the companies. Northside Hospital is also self-insured, but their claims are managed by a third party administrator called PMA Management Group. Kroger is self-insured but their claims are managed by Sedgwick CMS.
