Georgia Construction Workers Injured by Scissor Lift at Rock and Roll Construction Site, Dangers of Scissor Lifts to Workers Explained

ScissorLift

Not one, but two Georgia workers were injured earlier this year in May as a result of an accident with a scissor lift on the job. According to local news reports, on Tuesday, March 26, two workers were injured while working at the Rock and Roll construction site, which is located near the Hyundai Metaplant in Ellabell, Georgia. Local Bryan County Sheriff’s Office officials responded to the frightening and very dangerous accident, in which both workers fell from the scissor lift upon which they were working, and fell a distance of 25 to 30 feet. The scary and potentially fatal accident underscores just how dangerous scissor lifts can be to Decatur workers, and raises conversation about how Decatur workers can stay safer when working with or on scissor lifts.

Scissor Lifts – What are They?

At the outset, it is important for Decatur workers to be familiar with exactly what a scissor lift is, and what it does on a job site. Construction training professionals explain that scissor lifts are “platforms that can only move up and down and rest on crisscross support.” This differs from other aerial lifts, which work more like cranes, and can move in different directions, due to having multiple joints. Scissor lifts are used on worksites for workers to access things that are on high-levels. Scissor lifts can be seen in warehouse work environments, construction sites, and other worksites that require workers to reach areas high off of the ground.

The Dangers of Scissor Lifts to Decatur Workers

Safety professionals that work in the construction industry and with scissor lifts note that there are at least 36 workplace deaths per year that can be attributed to scissor lifts and aerial lifts. Although these pieces of equipment are necessary in many work environments, they also can be extremely dangerous to workers. Workers should be aware that there are a number of risks associated with working with and on scissor lifts, such as electrocution, lift “tip overs”, being caught between a lift and an object, and, as in the instant case, falling from a lift. Accordingly, it is extremely important that workers that work with and on scissor lifts are properly trained in how to use them, and that workers use necessary safety equipment when working with scissor lifts, and follow all safety rules and regulations closely. Being careful and diligent around scissor lifts and when working with scissor lifts, can help prevent terrible and fatal workplace accidents.
