Georgia Construction Worker Dies After Tragic Workplace Fall Accident at Soon-to-be Hyundai Metaplant

ConstrFall

A 35-year-old Statesboro, Georgia man tragically fell 60 feet to his death while he was working at the soon-to-be Hyundai Metaplant located at 1-16 and Highway 280 in Bryan County, Georgia. According to local reports, Victor Javier Caijija Gamboa, a subcontractor of Hyundai, was working at the Hyundai Metaplant Construction site on the floor where the Hyundai paint shop is planned to be housed. Initial investigations into the horrific fall indicate that part of the young construction worker’s safety harness failed, causing him to fall from the paint shop area of the massive construction site 60 feet. The Hyundai plant is said to be the “largest economic development deal in state history” and is set to employ more than 8,000 Georgia workers. Hyundai is reported to be investing $5.5 billion into the Georgia-based project, which will be its first U.S. manufacturing plant dedicated to manufacturing electric motor vehicles. Hyundai issued a statement in regards to Mr. Cajija Gamboa’s death, stating “Hyundai Motor Group is deeply saddened that a subcontractor died on April 29, 2023, as a result of injuries sustained in a workplace accident at the construction site of its Metaplant America manufacturing facility in Bryan County, Georgia…The individual fell from a three-story paint shop structure. Initial information indicates the individual’s safety harness lanyard failed. Together with the contractor and relevant authorities, we are fully supporting the investigation to understand the full circumstances of the incident to ensure this type of accident does not reoccur.” The fatal workplace accident is still reported to be under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Horrific Falling Death is Not an Isolated Incident in Construction

Unfortunately, falling deaths involving construction workers, like the one at the Hyundai Metaplant, are not all-too rare. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2021, over one-third of construction worker workplace deaths were caused as a result of injuries sustained by a fall on the job. Overall, in the United States, construction worker deaths accounted for 1 in 5 workplace deaths in 2021.
