Florida Crane Rental Company Fined after Worker Killed in Tragic Worksite Electrocution Accident
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has levied fines against a Florida crane company after the company’s employee was killed in a horrific electrocution accident on a worksite. According to Occupational Health & Safety online, the OSHA fines stem from a workplace accident that occurred in August, 2023. The worker is said to have been a 34-year-old crane operator who was operating a crane at a worksite in August, 2023, when the crane’s boom (the extended arm that was, at the time, lifting metal frames for roofing) hit power lines. The high-voltage power lines caused the crane operator to be electrocuted, and he died as a result. According to reports, the electrocution accident was so severe that the crane operator died immediately at the worksite. The crane operator who horrifically lost his life in the accident was not certified to be a crane operator.
Capt’n Hook’s Crane Service, the employer of the crane operator who lost his life, was assessed $26,585 in health and safety fines by OSHA in February, 2024. The violations include Capt’n Hook’s Crane Service’s failure to ensure that the crane was not operated near power lines and was on a stable foundation for operation, and also for employing an uncertified crane operator. OSHA Area Office Director Erin Sanchez said of the accident, “Fatal accidents in construction often occur because of the employer’s failure to follow basic safety protocols and industry-standard regulations. In this case, Capt’n Hook’s Crane Service cut corners and made the conscious choice to send an uncertified crane operator to a job site. That decision led to this worker losing their life.”
