El Paso Worker’s Death at Sewage Plant Under Investigation

WorkInjury16

An El Paso worker who worked for the city died this week on the job and authorities are eager to figure out just exactly what led up to his untimely and tragic workplace death. According to local news reports, the El Paso Times, the worker, identified as 34-year-old Jordan Haynesworth, of El Paso, died “following an incident” where he was working his shift for El Paso Water, at the Roberto Bustamante Wastewater Treatment Plant, a sewage plant in El Paso’s Lower Valley. Information about Mr. Haynesworth’s death is very scarce as investigators piece together the events of Friday afternoon, April 26, the day that Mr. Haynesworth fell victim to an on-the-job accident that took his life. However, reports indicate that at around 2:00 p.m., El Paso Fire Department responders were called to the Bustamante sewage plant to assist with a worker who was trapped in a water tank. Although it appears from reports that firefighters and first responders were able to free Mr. Haynesworth from the water tank, “a death on the scene was declared and law enforcement contacted.” Importantly, the Bustamante sewage plant was undergoing construction, but the accident was reportedly not within the construction zone. The Bustamante sewage plant handles up to 39 million gallons of sewage each day, and has been in operation for 32 years.

El Paso Water spokespersons released a statement regarding the terrible death of Mr. Haynesworth, stating, “Our heart goes out to the employee’s family during this difficult time.” News outlets reached out to law enforcement authorities investigating the workplace death, and police indicated that they are looking into the matter, but provided no further information, noting, “We investigate every death.”
