Can I still go to the doctor if I get fired?

Unemployed person looking for a job on the internet

It is a common scenario: you have been hurt on the job, you reported your injury, and now your employer and their insurance company are paying for you to go to the doctor. But what happens if your job fires you while you are still in the middle of treatment? Can you continue to receive treatment?

In Georgia, the answer is yes. In fact, if you have an accepted workers’ compensation claim and your authorized doctor continues to offer you treatment, you can receive medical care paid for by the employer/insurer for up to 400 weeks from the date of your accident.

There are some scenarios in which an employer/insurer may decide to deny (controvert) further medical treatment even though they initially agreed to send you to the doctor and even though you are still hurt. But the decision to deny further medical treatment or deny the claim completely is different from an employer’s decision to fire you. If you have been fired after an accident, but your claim has not been denied, you should be able to continue to receive medial treatment.

It is easy to get confused in these situations, and many times you will be given incorrect information by your employer, the insurance company, or even the doctor’s office. If you have been fired from your job but still need further medical treatment for your work injury, call the O’Connell Law Firm today!
